September has been a month of finishing old projects and beginning new ones. This piece is a bit of both. About a year ago I steam bent white oak into this form, attaching every point where the wood intersects with a bamboo skewer–a technique I learned last summer in Matthias Pliessnig’s class at the Anderson Ranch in Colorado. I plan on continuing this work over the next year, but with the help of a professional seamstress perhaps.
While working on this piece I caught some flak for making a ‘functional’ sculpture, but the debate between art and non-art fell to the wayside because I enjoyed making the piece and the thought that someone, someday, might enjoy having it in their home. Feel free to determine if it’s art or not, either way, enjoy!
